Le forum de trip-hop.net voit défiler les compositions personnelles et autres petits albums au détour d'un soundcloud ou d'un bandcamp. Il.lo appartient à ceux-là. Derrière ce pseudonyme étrange, se cachent Dejan Dejado et Andreas Schütz, un duo français rencontré à Prague qui a eu la bonne idée d'échanger des bouts de musique via la dropbox. Le premier au sample, le second au synthé et autres instruments virtuels, leurs contributions vont s'enchaîner pendant plus de 8 mois avant une session de mixage commune. Et c'est ainsi que Distances, le bien nommé, naquit. Distances, c'est donc une invitation au voyage entre l'Espagne (Ronda) et la Slovénie (Kozina). On prend beaucoup de plaisir dès la première écoute. Les arrangements sont simples sans être simplistes. Les mélodies fonctionnent très bien et pour un 5 pistes, il n'y a pas cette impression de trop peu assez commune pour ce type d'autoproduction. On se trouve bel et bien devant de l'abstract hip-hop de qualité avec une petite touche en plus qui permet de sortir du lot : l'utilisation d'une trompette (Grégoire Pitt) et de samples saxo/clarinette très bien trouvés (coup de coeur particulier à Ronda et Praha), le tout un peu dans la lignée d'un Bonobo parsemé de petites séquences rythmées (step, drum'n bass). Ajoutons à cela l'utilisation intelligente d'une interview du chef d'orchestre britannique Simon Rattle à propos de Gustav Mahler et des séquences percussives qui n'écrasent jamais l'ensemble pour un travail de mise à niveau très pro. Rien n'a été bâclé et ça fait bien plaisir. Une jolie découverte que nous vous invitons à découvrir sur Bandcamp en attendant la suite et dans l'espoir de concert accompagné de bons instruments. Considérant son parcours artistique, Hugh Mundell demeure une figure majeure de la musique jamaiquaine. Prématurément disparu, assassiné dans sa voiture pour une vulgaire histoire de frigo ( aux cotés de Junior Reid ) en 1983, alors qu’il était âgé de 21 ans, le jeune prodige Hugh Mundell prophétisa, la même année, l’émancipation du continent africaine, en signant, 5 ans plus tôt, le conscious et très roots «Africa must be free by 1983 », co-produit avec Augustus Pablo. Hugh Mundell enregistre, son premier single pour le producteur Joe Gibbs , « Where is natty dread ? » , avant de rencontrer Augustus Pablo qui le prend sous son aile. De 1975 à 1978, gravitant autour du Rockers Sound System, il enregistre plusieurs singles (en toastant sous le pseudo de Jah Levi), et les futurs titres qui figureront sur son premier album : « Africa must be free by 1983 ». De Harry J’s à Channel One , en passant par le mythique studio Black Ark de Lee Perry , il s’entoure des légendaires Jacob Miller, Leroy Sibbles, Benbow, Robbie Shakespear, Horsemouth, ou encore Chinna Smith, pour les musiciens et pour le son de Philip Smart ( assistant de Tubby jusqu’en 1975 ) , de Sylvan Morris ou encore du jeune Prince Jammy , qui mixa l’excellent album « Africa Dub» en 1979. « Africa must be free by 1983 » se veut être un album conscious , aux messages prophétiques («Africa must be free by 1983» ,«day of judgement», «Run revolution a come») emprunts de mysticisme, un appel à l’unité («Why do black man fuss and fight?», le tout, porté par le flow hypnotique et lancinant de Hugh Mundell, alors adolescent. Le son est roots , massif, dépouillés, du pur Rockers. En résumé, « Africa must be free by 1983 » est un incontournable du genre, un grand classique, une véritable tuerie. En 1980, Mundell sort l’excellent « Time & Place » (lui aussi très roots) , en collaboration avec Augustus Pablo, et , dans un même temps, « Jah Fire » produit par Prince Jammy, oú il partage le lead vocal avec le brillant Lacksley Castell, que l’on retrouve parfois sur les productions de Lee Perry . 1982, « Mundell », son dernier opus, du pur Channel One, antre du « Rub-a-Dub » style, produit par Henri « Junjo » Lawes, « backé » par les massifs Roots Radics , et mixé par un Scientist au sommet de son art, est un des meilleurs albums du genre . Maite Hontelé nació en Utrecht, una ciudad en el centro de Holanda. Ella nació y creció con la música: su padre tenia una collecion enorme de LP’s de la Fania All Stars, Conjunto Libre, Fruko y sus Tesos, El Gran Combo, Sonora Ponceña etc.. todos los días escuchaba salsa, sones, boleros, música colombiana, brasilera, flamenco… algo no muy común para una chica holandesa que normalmente escucharía musica clásica, y música holandesa. Cuando tenía 9 años consiguió su primera trompeta. La banda del pueblo estaba buscando trompetistas y así fue que empezó a tocar. Pero lo que tocaron no le gustaba, era música sin swing…ya estaba soñando con tocar salsa con su trompeta. Con 14 años Maite Hontelé empezó a tocar en un grupo de salsa y allí fue donde empezó a aprender a improvisar y aunque le daba miedo, fue increible para ella estar tocando la música que tanto le gustaba. Cuando tenia 17 años decidió que quería ser músico. Empezó sus estudios en el conservatorio de Rotterdam, una universidad única en el mundo donde puedes estudiar jazz, música clásica, flamenco, música brasilera y salsa. Era el paraiso! Source

One of the amazing things about the deeply Jamaican music called Dub is its ability to act as a conduit. Shlohmo (real name is Henry Laufer) is the flagship artist of Friends of Friends, a label whose artists are making it more and more difficult to distinguish between genres. The producers in FoF's stable draw on every musical ingredient available to them; they source samples and influences from any decade, genre, or style that they're interested in. What's most impressive about what Shlohmo and his peers are doing, and what's epitomized on Laid Out, is the way that they can transform vocal samples into instrumental elements while retaining the immediacy and accessibility we normally associate with pop vocals. Two sections of the Shlohmo's new EP, Laid Out, have an uncanny catchiness. The first is from the single "Don't Say No", featuring Tom Krell of How to Dress Well singing in his most desperate falsetto. The other sticky section is the loop from the best track on the EP, "Out of Hand". There's an obvious difference between the two: one features a singer emoting as best he can, with provocative, romantic lyrics. The other has just the ghost of a vocal, with words that are difficult to make out. But there's no difference in the intensity of the emotion that both songs conjure and the instrumentation in both is geared towards emphasizing those central refrains. "Later" the six-minute centerpiece of the album is similar to "Out of Hand" with its looped, anguished vocal sample. Only here, the voice is blurred beyond the point of recognition. The track doesn't have the same kind of grab as its predecessors (perhaps because the repeating loop is less recognizable as a human voice), but it's equally intense, with waxing and waning drum machines that surround and heighten that go-for-broke sample. Laufer's last project, the Vacation EP, played around with these kinds of melodies and samples, but that record largely avoided pop leanings. It was withdrawn, soft, pretty, akin to Nicolas Jaar's debut Space is Only Noise or to Teebs' Ardour. And while it was solid, Vacation was made for people who were already comfortable listening to electronic music. The first three tracks on Laid Out have far more ambition: they're meant to pull in pop and R&B listeners who might not otherwise be drawn towards electronic music. The last two songs on the EP, "Put It" and "Without", hold more back and function almost as sketches of the songs that come before them. Each has an instrumental through-line that one can imagine being replaced by a stronger sample. They're smart and well-constructed but they can seem out of place, and dwarfed by what came before. Still, those first three: Shlohmo's already one of the better producers of his young generation and Laid Out should add substantially to his growing reputation. Source

If there was ever to be a poster child of the disco movement, Barry White would be a top pick. Across his own solo career and through his Love Unlimited Orchestra and Love Unlimited side projects, he dominated the early days of this feel-good genre. And Love Unlimited felt best of all. White worked with vocalists Diane Taylor, Glodean James, and Glodean's sister, Linda James, for nearly a year before their 1972 debut album, a disappointing set that nevertheless yielded one of the signature hits of the age, "Walking in the Rain With the One I Love." It was that ethereal beauty that the trio hoped to re-create with the autumn 1973 release of Under the Influence Of.... They succeeded, with room to spare. The album opens with the soaring strings of the Love Unlimited Orchestra's instrumental "Love's Theme," a stupendous mood-setter that was released on that band's album nearly simultaneously and became a number one hit in December. However, here the piece was merely intended to set the scene for all that was to follow. From the effusive "Oh Love, Well We Finally Made It" and the tender ballad "Lovin' You, That's All I'm After" to the Motown-ish strains of "It May Be Winter Outside (But in My Heart It's Spring") (which gave the trio another Top 50 hit), Love Unlimited served up a nonstop diet of heartfelt, if not always heart-stopping, music. A sweetly tempting byproduct of its era, Under the Influence Of... doesn't walk away with top honors, and White was always best on his own material. Love Unlimited's variations on his trademark waka-waka guitar and lush strings are never less than fascinating, however, and the poignancy of the nostalgia train continues to churn. Source

Tomotsugu Nakamura is a sound artist and graphic designer residing in Tokyo, Japan. He uses various instruments such as guitar, piano, synthesizers along with field recordings and glitches as sound sources, and lays those sounds as if sketching dotted patterns on white clean paper. Thus the songs are shaped in very absract forms and the details are astonishingly precise, however, they sound very tender and melodius at the end which makes his music so special and different from the others. Time to Rock my Soul – Disc 1 Right from Lance Anderson’s piano intro on the opening track, “Don’t Try To Lay No Boogie Woogie on the Queen of Rock n’ Roll,” (one of the few cover tunes on the album and an early 70’s classic from the late Long John Baldry) I was hooked! After hearing the stirring rocker (and title track) “Time,” the catchy ballad “Bring Me Back,” and the slick “My Dreamerman,” I thought to myself, “Wow, she did it again… It’s another winner.” The first disc closes with the gritty “Devil Only Knows My First Name” and the Brooke Blackburn & S’Aida composition “Don’t Tell Mama Where Her Children Hide.” All the tunes are impeccably produced by Howard Ayee and Shakura and leave you craving more. The majority of the tracks on Disc 1 are written by Shakura and her guitarist Donna Grantis; the same one-two punch that sounded so awesome on Brown Sugar.

 

Time for the blues – Disc 2 This disc kicks off with Anders Osborne’s foot tapping “Ya Ya,” and then the soulful and rousing “GeeChee Woman.” Ian Martin’s double bass and Anderson’s B3 on the fourth track “Tell Me Baby” will have you snapping your fingers along to this contagious groove. And the tunes just keep coming with the spoken & sung lyrics of “That Ain’t Right” that’s oh so Shakura. As a change of pace S’Aida does a haunting rendition of Billie Holliday’s “Tell Me More, More And Then Some.” And then another Shakura original called “Blues Dancing” which features Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne on piano… Disc 2 and Time comes to a dazzling close with a classy acoustic blues duet with Harrison Kennedy called “Halfway Blues.” I listened to the last track several times over as the chemistry between Harrison and Shakura was so very cool. Il y a des albums qui tombent mal. On n'essaie pas forcément de les écouter et on les met de côté. Puis on retombe dessus... Pas tout à fait par hasard quand c'est signé chez Jarring effects dont on connaît l'intérêt pour les découvertes électroniques à haute valeur ajoutée. Think about the future est donc la première création officielle d'un autodidacte : Tristan Spella aka Mat3r dolorosa qu'on avait déjà pu croiser à travers des collectifs comme Rockwave ou Jarring effects. La graphie de ce nom de scène n'est d'ailleurs pas loin de rappeler un certain EZ3kiel dont il pourrait être un parent proche. Think about the future est un projet solitaire - complété de quelques featurings vocaux (Black Sifichi/Ezra) et scratches (Djohn) - pour lequel il utilise guitare, batterie et bien entendu l'indispensable sampler. L'album s'ouvre sur la voix rauque du story teller New Yorkais Black Sifichi qui avait déjà croisé la route de Brain damage (Burning before sunset) autre client de Jarring effects. Petit monde que voilà ! La suite abandonne le spoken word pour une trame toujours aussi sombre et mélodique. The way of the samouraï invite Jim Jarmush et son désormais classique Ghost dog dont on regrettera quand même le sample en français* plutôt que la puissante version originale portée par la voix d'un Forest Whitaker au sommet de son art et bien plus mystique. Il n'empêche que sa construction progressivo-explosive avec une très jolie montée en puissance au fil du morceau laisse augurer du meilleur. Et certains morceaux à venir construits sur ce même schéma ne démentent pas cette première impression. Fighting inside, Reloading et L.Bishop sont même des modèles du genre. On en redemande... Et si la chute dénote un peu du reste de l'album (Not a game semble plus brouillon et Urban comic's trip n'est pas une conclusion à la hauteur) on ne va pas bouder son plaisir pour autant. L'ensemble est vraiment très bon. Le son très personnel avec ses basses introspectives qui doivent claquer en live d'autant que le projet semble associé au vj-ing d'un certain Johnooded à l'imaginaire annoncé comme sombre et envoûtant dont on vous laisse apprécier le teaser ou encore cette session live au Riddim Collision de Lyon. A suivre de très près...  Source

C'est une douce révolution. Si Mélissa Laveaux n'a rien escamoté de l'identité très forte dessinée par un premier album acclamé (Camphor And Copper, 2008), elle s'est aujourd'hui réinventée. À la douceur acoustique d'un folk langoureux et chaloupé, la jeune femme préfère à présent l'énergie plus sophistiquée d'une pop percutante et irrésistible. L'écriture est toujours aussi personnelle, la voix toujours aussi sensuelle et juvénile, mais les orchestrations explosent en un feu d'artifice inventif, qui fait la part belle aux rythmiques et à des sonorités plus synthétiques. C'est la réinvention d'une vie. Née à Montréal en 1985 de parents haïtiens, Mélissa Laveaux grandit à Ottawa (Ontario). Dans la foulée de son premier album, elle s'installe en France, une étape délicate qui nourrit largement les textes de Dying Is A Wild Night. La jeune femme y envisage ces dernières années sous un angle intime, puisant dans des moments difficiles une énergie nouvelle. Emprunté à la poétesse américaine Emily Dickinson, le vers complet est 'Dying Is A Wild Night And A New Road'. L'idée est belle et symbolique : rompre les amarres avec son pays était à la fois un déchirement et la promesse d'un nouveau départ. C'était aussi un noeud de paradoxes : dans un même mouvement, Mélissa s'éloignait et se rapprochait de sa famille. Elle a mieux appréhendé le parcours de ses parents, émigrés haïtiens, tandis que l'éloignement géographique se doublait d'une incompréhension de leur part sur son choix. C'est le thème du single Postman : arrivée à Paris, il a fallu trouver des ressources ailleurs que dans une lettre que le facteur ne déposera jamais. La beauté et l'énergie de Dying Is A Wild Night tiennent à une tension entre cette écriture très personnelle et un travail profondément collectif. L'enregistrement des maquettes, d'abord, s'est fait avec la batteuse de jazz Anne Paceo, indice déterminant sur des chansons à l'assise rythmique souvent étonnante (Mélissa voue une admiration sans borne au duo Wildbirds & Peacedrums, qui travaille sur les combinaisons percussions/voix). La suite est un travail de studio passionnant avec trois réalisateurs : Vincent Taeger, Vincent Taurelle (claviers de Air) et Ludovic Bruni, qui ont remodelé certains titres et apporté beaucoup à la texture sonore des chansons. Il y a là une modernité qui évoque volontiers la pop mutante de Santigold et Goldfrapp mais aussi les derniers développements de la carrière de Fiona Apple, exigeants et inventifs derrière leurs atours pop. Mélissa Laveaux le confie sans difficulté : elle écoute beaucoup plus de musique qu'elle n'en écrit. Cela informe ses chansons de milles nuances et influences parfaitement assimilées. L'étonnante reprise du Hash Pipe de Weezer s'impose comme la touche rock d'un album à l'éclectisme élégant : soul chantée d'une voix de velours (Dew Breaker), pépites énergétiques et élancées (Pretty Girls, Sweet Wood) ou tubes pop parfaitement balancés entre sonorités organiques et synthétiques (les incroyables Triggers et Generous Bones). Comme un trait d'union avec le premier album de Mélissa, une merveille acoustique au déhanché délicat s'est glissée en fin d'album : chantée en créole, Pie Bwa est une variation autour du Strange Fruit de Billie Holiday, écrite du point de vue de l'arbre, ensanglanté. Une image puissante sur un album audacieux : orchestrations modernes, mélodies imparables et textes personnels traversés d'interrogations sur la foi, Dying Is A Wild Night est de la trempe des grands disques pop, qui touchent à la fois le coeur, la tête et le plexus.
